One of the best things about working at the animal shelter is knowing that you are making a diffrence in the lives of so many animals. When they are lost, we help them find their families. When they are abandoned we give them a loving home until they find a new family. When they are sick we nurture them back to health. Another great thing about working at an animal shelter is the pictures and stories our adopters send us letting us know how the newest member of the family is doing. Here we would like to tell some happy "tails" about the cats and dogs who have found their forever families. Enjoy!

(Zoe BEFORE adoption)
A feel good happy story from one of our adopters. Not sure if you all remember, but Zoe was a blind Cocker mix that was surrendered to our shelter back in 2015. She was surrendered because she was blind and old. We ended up adopting her out at no charge to the adopters, who in turn donated the adoption fee to the shelter. We informed the adopting family of Zoe's condition and they happily adopted her knowing full well her time could very well be limited and also knowing of her health conditions. Now, Zoe, although still blind, is living the life of luxury. She in fact now has become a model for Foster & Smith catalog. It is definitely a proud moment for those of us at the shelter. It just goes to show, even though the pet may be considered "broken" by some, there are plenty of people out there will to adopt pets with special needs and giving them the loving homes they so deserve. You don't have to be perfect, to be loved. Please read the email below.
"Good Morning,
In the spring of 2015 my husband & I adopted a special needs dog from your shelter. Her name was Zoe, she was 10 years old and blind.
ZoZo , as we call her is still doing absolutely wonderful. She is still blind but because of the great care she has received in her new home, she no longer needs to have the daily drops. She has 3 dog sisters and lounges around at will. Zo zo has learned to use the doggy doors that we have in the home so she can go in and out on her own as she wishes.
I work for Petco in Rhinelander, and Zozo has even been used as a model in the Foster & Smith catalog. I wanted to share her picture. We have absolutely no regrets taking on a special needs dog and hope we have many healthy years ahead with her.
Maybe others will see her and realize that special needs/ senior dogs are not hopeless, they are full of love and are just looking for the right family to help them live out their final years."
Ginger (renamed Tilly) with a new friend "Pip"
Dear LCHS,
I just realized how much time I let lapse since we sent a photo of Tilly ("ginger", who we adopted last may), our walker mix.
She has really come out of her shell! She used to be somewhat timid around strangers (especially men), but now she walks down the street with her tail wagging the whole time. She even got so bold that for awhile she felt confident enough to steal food off the counter(2 sticks of butter, cooling christmas cookies, an entire huge calzone!)! Im hoping shes learned thats not allowed now (lets cross our fingers!).
She is just the sweetest, most gentle dog-so good with her little buddy "Pip" (from the Marathon County Humane Society) and the kids. Everyone that meets her just loves her and we have so many people comment about what a good/sweet/pretty/etc, ect dog she is! (And we always make sure to say she's from your Humane Society!)
Thank you so much for helping her come into our family-I wouldn't trade her for anything!
Sincerly,
Lara and my family
Dear friends at the Humane Society, I just wanted to write and let you know that Ozzie is doing great! He is happy living in Chicago, and he’s really happy now that spring has arrived and he can run around on the boulevard. Yesterday he got a new toy, a new collar, and had a bath. We went camping last weekend and he got nice & dirty (no ticks though). At first Oz was afraid of most things (people, other dogs, air planes over head, and especially city busses). Often he would growl at them, but after a month or so of socializing and settling in, Oz is now very friendly and trustworthy around grown ups and most other dogs. We are practicing being friendly with children right now. Ozzie's favorite activities include tummy scratches, bothering people when they try to pee, rolling in tall grasses and getting into bed with me in the morning while I am hitting the snooze button. He also enjoys barking at the drive through bank teller. Ozzie and I will be living in northern Wisconsin this summer and might stop by for a visit!

Thanks for all the good work you do.

On November 19,2011, I was helping string holiday lights at the LCHS and someone foolishly suggested that we take a break and warm up inside. I tried to resist going in, I knew it was a bad idea.
Eventually I relented. One step inside the door and I saw Bailey! What a cutie! But I was told he wasn't well enough to be adopted yet.... but he had siblings. I know, another bad idea to walk even farther inside to see more puppies.
Well, one look at her pleading sweet face and climbing the kennel - I snapped a picture, sent it to my husband and said "come get her!"
So, there we are. One year after the loss of our son, adopting a beagle mix that he would have wanted.
She loves "huggies" and although we don't allow our dogs to jump on people, hugs are a different story.
She actually curls her paws around our hips and buries her head in our sides.
4 years later and we still love her the minute we first saw her.

Roscoe
This is July 4th weekend where Roscoe was meeting the family members. This is our grandson, Jordan who is 12 years old. They claimed each other, as their own. Our grandson lives in Appleton so Roscoe is his when he visits. They truly bonded at first sight; who wouldn't love this blue heeler?!
Thanx for all you have done for 'US'
Hi…I wanted to write and let you folks know how Tokyo is doing in his new home. His introduction to my other dog (Snoopy) was a bit more difficult than I thought it would be. The first hour that he was here was pretty tense (for want of a better term). This was due to Snoopy’s attitude, not Tokyo’s. However, Snoopy is a great dog, and he’s very smart. He knows that I make the rules here, not him. All dogs want to have things their own way. My job was to make him understand that he did not have a choice in this matter. A little yelling, two or three little clips on the nose…nothing that would hurt him…I NEVER hurt my dogs…and he finally started to “get it”. When things got a little calmer, they did their “sniffing each other out” ceremony, and within a few minutes they were playing like they had been buddies for years. (God, I wish I had that much energy!!!). As of right now, after two days, they are just fine with each other. Tokyo has gotten used to his new surroundings, and he has already proven to me that he is going to be a great dog and a wonderful companion for Snoopy…and me.
I also want to thank all you folds, not only for being so nice to me when I came in looking for a dog, but for the work you do with animals who have had a rough time of it in their lives. Many of the dogs I have had over the last fifty-plus years have come from shelters, and every single one of them turned out to be great dogs, and more importantly, great friends. It has been a privilege for me to have been part of their lives, and I am very happy that I am able to give Tokyo the chance that ALL dogs deserve…The chance to be happy and above all loved.
I really don’t get to Antigo that often, but when I am in town, I’ll stop to say hello and give you an update on Tokyo and Snoopy and I'll bring a photo or two for your bulletin board. Thank you again for all your help and for the work you do. My very best wishes to all of you.
Sincerely,
Keith

Hi Everyone;
This is a picture of “Bud”, who we have renamed Winston, in honor of his English heritage. As you can see, he and our Lab Max are already pals.
He is funny and loves to play the clown, chase the cats and loves to run in the woods. We’ve been training him to walk on a harness and he’s done very well. He’s been eating and sleeping comfortably. Every morning when we wake up, he grabs the hem of our sleeping top and when we return home from work, he grabs the sleeve of our jacket, as if to say “let’s go”. His first vet appointment went well; his stool sample and blood tests showed no problems. He continues to respond to “stay”, “sit” and “shake” (his paw). What joy this pup will bring us!
Thank you for taking good care of him while he waited for us to come and take him home.

ELLIE
ELLIE WAS A CAT WITH A SPECIAL NEED WHEN I FIRST MEET HER. HER BACK LEG HAD BEEN BROKEN AND BEING A STRAY, THE LEG WAS MENDING BY ITSELF. SHE NEEDED TO BE OUT OF THE KENNEL TO PUT WEIGHT ON IT. I HESITATED ABOUT FOSTERING AS I GREW UP ALLERGIC TO CATS/KITTENS. WELL NEED LESS TO SAY, SHE NEVER WENT BACK TO THE HUMANE SOCIETY.. SHE IS THE QUEEN OF THE HOUSE FOR THE PAST 8 YEARS..
We adopted Daisy in August of 2014 when she was part of a litter of puppies you had at the shelter. She has been the sweetest addition to our family. She joined our home that has 3 small children, a sheltie named Winston, and a cat named Licorice. (Our cat also came from the shelter) Daisy loves to take walks in the woods with her "Dad" and could play fetch for hours. Even thought it seems some days that we are running a zoo, I couldn't imagine not having her. She loves to get her cuddle time and belly rubs Most of the time I will find her snuggling in the chair sleeping with my husband, as they are inseparable. I like to think that she feels just as lucky to have us as we feel that we found her. Our "Daisy Duke" has been a very healing and special dog for our family. Thank you for allowing us to take her home!
